| Project Objectives / Summary:
There were four key objectives:
- Providing education to GPs regarding the physiological and psychological factors of post natal depression that affect both parents;
- Equipping GPs to involve and support men in the transition to fatherhood;
- Providing an education and support program for first time parents (referred by their GPs), with emphasis on the role of fathers;
- Encouraging the development of positive relationships between new fathers and GPs, with a view to ongoing health management of the father.
Project Outcomes:
The project was terminated by the Division because of a lack of on-the-ground support. The target groups were GPs based in the Division and couples recruited from GPs involved in obstetrics at two local hospitals.
Attempts to attract sufficient couples to make the project viable failed. Only three couples sought to participate and none of these were GP referrals.
Lessons / Assessment:
This was potentially a quite innovative project. It failed to progress because of recruitment issues.
